Prototype 1
1930 Dumaine Street, Treme Neighborhood
Community Partner: Neighborhood Housing Services
CITYbuild School: Tulane University School of Architecture
Spring - Summer 2006
Prototype 1 is the first of four house prototypes to be built over the next two years by Tulane URBANbuild in collaboration with Neighborhood Housing Services. Tulane URBANbuild, a program of the Tulane City Center, is a comprehensive program challenging students and faculty to develop creative and sustainable urban design strategies, innovative designs for new housing, and proposals for site-specific urban interventions and large-scale mixed use urban environments. During the Spring 2006 semester, students focused on the Treme neighborhood and compled Prototype 1 at the end of Summer 2006.
Services Provided
The students provided design and construction services for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, single family residence. The 1370 s.f. home can be built with slight variations which produce a duplex scheme; accommodating multigenerational living, two family living, or a mixed use scenario in which part of the house can be used as an office or small commercial space. The design successfully deals with issues of programmatic adaptability, newly required elevation from ground in response to the flood, and maintaining the relationship of the dwelling to the typical public activities of New Orleans neighborhoods.
Timeline
During the Spring 2006 semester, Tulane students designed five prototypical homes, choosing one for construction over Summer 2006. The students completed the design and construction documents in preparation for groundbreaking in May 2006. Construction was completed in September 2006 and the official opening of the Prototype 1 took place on October 16th.
Funding and Support
Prototype 1 was funded by Len and Louise Riggio and in partnership with Neighborhood Housing Services of New Orleans, UJAMAA, NeighborWorks America, M.I.T, and BNIM.
