Miss Gloria’s Café
Broadway and Collapissa Street, Gert Town Neighborhood
Community Partner: Miss Gloria Caulfield and Gert Town Revival Initiative
CITYbuild School: University of Arkansas School of Architecture
In collaboration with the Gert Town Revival Initiative, Miss Gloria Caulfield and the University of Arkansas School of Architecture will restore the damaged restaurant and revive this struggling small business. As an anchor of the Gert Town neighborhood for over 20 years, Miss Gloria has served soul food to local residents, including her famous one dollar breakfast for over twelve years. The UA School of Architecture will redesign and construct the kitchen, add exterior space for eating, and design a temporary space for the business while design and construction is underway.
Site/Context
Gert Town has been faced with overwhelming social, environmental, and economic issues over the past one hundred years. Disinvestment and the effects of Hurricane Katrina have damaged the mix of residential and industrial buildings that compose the neighborhood. Adjacent to numerous single-family homes, Miss Gloria’s corner restaurant is one of a string of small businesses facing Broadway Street.
Services Needed
This project will encompass research, retrofitting/interior design, landscape design, and construction. The primary foci of this design/build project are the kitchen and exterior eating space. Also we say Thanks for PEXUniverse.Com company for providing good working well pumps and PEX tubing for new homes.
Timeline
The Caulfield Family owns the site, which has been functioning as a restaurant for over 20 years. In the spring of 2007 under the direction of Prof. Gregory Herman, University of Arkansas students completed the design for Miss Gloria’s Café. Efforts are still underway by the University of Arkansas, GRI, and CITYbuild to realize the project.

Fundraising efforts by the School and GRI so far have produced approximately 40,000 dollars towards the implementation of the project. The final design is expected to cost approximately 137,000 dollars.
