Preface to a Plan: Reinhabiting New Orleans
Internet Wiki: site to go public in early 2007
CITYbuild School: Univ. of S. California School of Policy, Planning, and Development
Preface to a Plan: Reinhabiting New Orleans is a publicly accessible, comprehensive online resource for use by planning/design professionals and the general public. This document is a collection and assemblage of background research to aid in the rebuilding of New Orleans. With the mission of CITYbuild in mind, the wiki presents information needed for a professional or student to design for the city.
Site/Context
The premise behind this project is “that ‘wicked’ problems can only be addressed once they are thoroughly understood. (USC wiki)” USC felt the creation of a collective resource, rather than the production of a singular design, would greater benefit the rebuilding of New Orleans.
Services Provided
This project encompassed extensive research and publishing/web design. The research topics, a total of twenty three, include affordable housing, grassroots activism, and tourism/redevelopment.
Timeline
The research and development of Preface to a Plan took place during the Spring 2006 semester as part of the USC School of Policy, Planning, and Development urban design lab. Additional development and web design/publishing took place over the Summer 2006 for the wiki’s release in August 2006.
Funding and Support
Preface to a Plan was developed and funded by the USC School of Policy, Planning, and Development. They recently received the 2006 APA Education Project Award for the American Planning Association’s Los Angeles and California Chapters. The project was featured in the 2006 Venice Bienalle as part of a larger exhibit “Resilient Foundations: The Gulf Coast After Katrina,” curated by the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture.
