Katrina House of Care

Community Partner: Katrina House of Care
CITYbuild School: University of Minnesota School of Architecture
The Katrina House of Care, a new nonprofit organization providing assistance to Katrina victims, is developing a series of homes to provide long term housing and holistic support necessary to help the most vulnerable populations of New Orleans, including the elderly and disabled, return to the city. The University Minnesota School of Architecture assisted the organization with the design of their first house in the Tulane/Gravier neighborhood. This 24 hour facility is the future home of three residents and one caretaker.
Site/Context
The home is located at 2541 Bienville Street, on the corner of Bienville and Dorgenois in the Tulane/Gravier neighborhood. A majority of the area is occupied by renters with small industrial sites scattered throughout.
Services Needed
The home is a double wide shotgun house that will be converted into a single dwelling for three elderly or disabled residents and one care giver. The students from the University of Minnesota documented the existing structure and re-designed the interior for future conversion.
Timeline
The students documented and redesigned the home during the Summer 2006 semester.
