The heat transfer plates are indirect sources used for transferring heat from one unit to another. They are made of metals such as aluminum, stainless steel or brass and are used for transferring heat generated from liquid substances to their destined surfaces. Since, a large amount of heat can be transferred through them within a short time period, so these are most extensively used units in applications with extreme temperature.
The cold and hot surfaces within which exchange of heat takes place are separated through these plates. For this reason, these heat transfer plates are also called as 'metallic wall'. Two main mechanisms on which these plates work are convection and conduction. With such mechanics, these plates are able to heat even large areas in very less span of time. Very thin metallic surface is provided to these heat exchange sheets, which make the transfer of heat possible till the best optimum level. This is because the generated heat has to get penetrated into very thin sized sheet ranging between 0.3 to 0.8mm.
In addition to this, the turbulence level in the liquid medium is very high. This provides a greater convection level, which further results in effectual transfer of heat between tow mediums. This entire mechanism therefore reduces the rate of fouling, which makes these metallic heat transfer plates free from chlorination and corrosion. It also imparts much durability to the plate while reducing maintenance and repair cost to the user. Most of these plates are incorporated with several thin sized metallic sheets whose number can be increased in need. So this provides great flexibility to these plates which was not the case in conventional heat exchanging plates.

A narrow pattern provides higher pressure drop rate to the system, alongside making the heat transfer sheets more effective. Almost all these plates are manufactured by keeping in mind this functionality thereby making the overall operating temperature and pressure optimum. This is another reason which is why such plates are extensively used by contractors in extreme temperature conditions.
